The lady prefers Budapest. Can availability only be checked at the ticket-abroad desk at the main station in Kyiv? Or are there any online options?

First of all - even if you've decided to travel via Hungary (which is itself too big detour to North-West, I reccomend you to avoid this) - reaching Budapest is non-needed additional detour to West.
The start by Kyiv - Vienna car is possible, but change to Bucharest-bound direction should be done in Püspökladány and Oradea (or1 change instead of 2 is possible via Solnok, but in this case later arrival to Bucharest)

Also it's possible to have just one change in Ungeni, quicker and much cheaper.
There are very few trains in Ungheni so the chace to get lost seems to me extremely low.

Kyiv 0:48 - 15:16 Ungheni - by 341 (purchaseable only in ticket counter, seat availability is possible to check by railway.by website)
Ungheni 20:45 - 6:20 Bucharest (bookable on railway.md)
main advantage in this case, additionally to quite low total price is also early morning arrival to Bucharest, but not in the late evening, like in other itinearies

117 to Сhernivtsi definitely operate. On the moment when I'm typing this there is few available kupe ticket from Vinnytsia to Chernivtsi for 13.06 (but probably passenger will need to come to Vinnytsia by other previous train, chance to catch a seat from Kyiv to Vinnytsia to same train still exist, but it's not guaranteed).

Thanks to both of you! The lady opted for Budapest, so I got her on the 749, the ticket price was 1937 hrivs.
What I meant by 117 was that the Bucharest through car wasn't going that day. Thanks for the Ungheni - Bucharest itinerary, I will try that one out.
